Fighting For Economic Justice & Public Education

Ohio’s future depends on a fair, equitable, and people-centered budget that cares for all of us.

We Ohioans believe in taking care of one other, no matter our skin color, our ability, or how much money we have. But for nearly two decades, our elected officials have passed a state budget that does not meet our needs or provide us with opportunities to thrive.

Instead, the wealthy few and corporations have hoarded wealth, lining their pockets at the expense of our schools, hospitals, and child care centers. That is why we are demanding a People’s Budget.

Our Work

In partnership with Policy Matters Ohio, OOC developed a People’s Budget with a comprehensive narrative and policy agenda around investing our tax dollars in a strong safety net (especially around child care infrastructure), quality public education, affordable healthcare, and reinvestment in community safety for the state budget cycle.

Our Victories

  • In 2021, we joined forces with the Ohio Education Association, Ohio Federation of Teachers, and Policy Matters Ohio to pass the Fair School Funding Plan (FSFP) as part of the 2021-2023 Ohio budget. We formed the All In For Ohio Kids Coalition to help ensure that Ohio lawmakers fairly and fully fund our public schools.

  • In 2023, we built upon our previous public education work as a coalition to protect the FSFP for a second time.

  • In 2021, we expanded eligibility for childcare subsidies to 6,000 more Ohio families. We also won a year of guaranteed postpartum care for those who’ve given birth and guaranteed Medicaid treatment for breast cancer and cervical cancer.

  • In 2022, our child care leaders with The CEO Project (CEO) helped win over $20 million in Franklin County to help families afford child care, providers to reach or maintain quality care standards, and early childhood educators to afford housing. Cincinnati officials also committed $1 million towards local child care facilities in the Cincinnati budget.

  • In 2023, CEO child care leaders helped pass budget provisions that will give doulas Medicaid reimbursement for their work, provide continuous Medicaid coverage for eligible kids from birth to age 3, and expand child care eligibility to low-income families up to 145% of the poverty line.

  • In 2023, CEO leaders also released a well-publicized memo to Intel urging them to fund Ohio’s child care infrastructure and support Ohio’s workforce as they build a new multibillion-dollar chip plant in central Ohio.
